Swimmons Academy

Swimmons Academy – Learn to Swim at BGCR Danbury

Swimmons Academy is the BGCR Danbury Clubhouse’s official Learn‑to‑Swim program, created to teach children life‑saving water‑safety skills, confidence in and around the water, and strong foundational stroke technique.
Led by our Aquatics Director and former Division I swimmer, Shayne Simmons, the Academy offers a supportive, fun, and progression‑based environment where every swimmer learns at their own pace.

Our approach prioritizes:

  • Water Safety: Breath control, floating, safe entries/exits, and personal survival skills
  • Stroke Development: Proper body position, efficient kicking, and strong foundational freestyle/backstroke
  • Confidence Building: Positive instruction that helps every swimmer feel comfortable and capable
  • Professional Coaching: Technique‑focused guidance from a nationally trained aquatics professional

Swimmons Academy Overview

Swimmons Academy is the official Learn‑to‑Swim and aquatic development pathway of the Boys & Girls Club of Danbury. The program is designed and led by Aquatics Director and former NCAA Division I swimmer, Shayne Simmons, with a curriculum built around safety, calm instruction, confidence‑building, and skill‑based progression.
Every class follows a consistent 30‑minute lesson format to create comfort, stability, and predictable learning:
  1. Welcome & Safety
  2. Warm‑Up
  3. Core Skill Work
  4. Challenge/Application
  5. Sliding Review & Positive Close
Swimmers advance based on mastery, not session count or age.

Swimmons Academy Level Structure

Level 1 – Bronze

For new swimmers learning water comfort, assisted floating, breath control, and basic safety skills. Ideal for hesitant swimmers or those who cannot float yet.

Level 1+ – Bronze+ (Ages 9+)

A specialized group for older beginners (ages 9–14) who need foundational skills but benefit from age‑appropriate communication, pace, and expectations. Benchmarks match Bronze, but instruction is tailored for older swimmers.

Level 2 – Silver

For swimmers who can float independently and are ready to travel across the pool, learn controlled breathing, and build consistent independent movement.

Level 3 – Gold

For swimmers ready to develop proper freestyle and backstroke technique, breathing timing, and endurance. This is the final technical level before entering structured pre‑competition training.

Level 4 – Champions (Pre‑Competition)

For swimmers preparing for team‑style training. Focuses on endurance, technique refinement, structured practice habits, and race readiness.
