The Boys & Girls Club of Ridgefield is participating in the national Trex film recycling challenge for the third year. Beginning on Nov. 15 (America Recycles Day), plastic film items have been getting dropped off at both the Boys & Girls Club and the Ridgefield Recycling Center.

This year, one of the Trex collection bins will be located at the recycling center near the large green Winters Bros. receptacle bin. Winters Bros. recycles the plastic film items, forgoing the waste revenue, to support the program, which ends on April 22, Earth Day.

Last year, club members collected 369 pounds and in 2013 they collected 472 pounds. As a result of these numbers, the club earned two Trex benches made from reclaimed plastic and wood.

Plastic film items include grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, Ziploc and food storage bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, salt bags, and cereal bags. All plastic must be clean, dry and free of food residue.

Items that are not films include frozen food bags, shredded cheese bags, prewashed lettuce bags, degradable bags, laminate film, candy wrappers, and chip bags.
